The understanding of the present is shaped by one's understanding of the past, and especially, or more acutely, the past that wasn't personally experienced. More distant personal pasts exhibit this fragmentation, but, necessarily, the past not experienced is an inauthentic experience, where one only perceives the peaks and valleys. It's a cold summary of the complete rush of phenomenological information overload that is present existence, and even incomparable to the echoes of distant experience, fading as the distance increases.
